While today most computers are connected through usb. Some still use the old style Parallel Port to connect printers among other things. Parallel ports were developed by IBM as a way to connect a printer to your PC. When IBM was making the PC, the company wanted the computer to work with printers offered by Centronics, one of the top printer manufacturer at the time. IBM decide not to use the style that Centronics used. Instead they made a new one a 25-pin connector and relased a cable that worked with the Centronics printers.
