RJ-11 is a physical interface most commonly for telephone wire terminals. It has a total of 6 connector positions, but usually only positions 2 and 4 are ever used. The RJ-11 is one of the most common of the registered jacks because all (PTOS) use this type of connector. Most of the time an RJ-11 is a 6p4c jack with 4 wires connecting to a central junction box. Only 2 of the four wires get used. The extra 2 wires can be used for a variety of applications tone dialing pulse dialing etc.
